Has anyone recently road-tripped around Australia? |
Hi, I am hoping to road trip from Melbourne, up the east coast to Townsville, through to Mt Isa, come down through and see Uluru, all the way down to Kangaroo Island and back through the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne, at the end of this year. I would really appreciate some travel tips and advice from anyone who has also done this Oz trip or similar. I'm still a student and thinking of staying at camping sites as I go.. any help with the following questions would be GREAT!
What kind of vehicle did you travel in?
How much time did you allow for the trip?
Did you go alone, or with others? Opinions? (I want to go solo)
How much did you budget, and did you go over?
Did you ever run out of petrol, really struggle to find a petrol station while in the remote areas, or have a jerry can on board?
What accommodation did you use/recommend?
If you went again, what would you do differently?
Thanks heaps!!
First, I have not done that exact trip, and can only respond to the question based on other travels around Australia. '
I would not consider doing the trip alone, under any circumstances. Travel the route you have suggested in a well equiped Ute. Carry water and Petrol.
Assume you are going to have problems finding both going from Mt Isa to Uluru, although you probably will not. Err on the side of caution. Fill with petrol every chance you get on the outback portion of the trip.
Budget 100 a day plus petrol. camp with a tent most of the time, but settle in to a pub on occasion for a beer and a shower. Allow a minimum of 30 days, and enjoy!
book your ferry crossing to KI well in advance, and be aware that it is pricey to take your vehicle to the island.
